ok so we finally finished watching this movie..it took a while but we finally did it. i need to retract what i said about the movie missing the point of the book because it actually got it a little. like i said, in the book the concept is that these young vampires decide to kill everyone in the town of barrow alaska during the 30 days of night that they experience there during the winter, and the elder vampires come along and they are mad at the others for this massacre because it has taken hundreds of years for vampires to slip from truth into legend. while this was not a predominant part in the film, they still made a point to touch on it.
overall, i think the movie was a pretty good representation of the book, aside from the parts that where the film took liberties in dramatization (but come on, what do you expect from a book made into a movie [especially when the movie has more minutes in it than the book has pages]).
anyhow. this was a new look at vampires for the class. we havent really seen any ones that are just blood-thirsty-messy-eaters. most of the ones that we have seen have been classy-tux-wearing-breast-biting-sip-your-blood-from-a-wine glass-vampires. so this was a good addition (i think) to our collection of vampires
It sounds like in the book, more than the movie, (but still some in the movie)there are different types of vampires; the bloodthirsty ones and the "smarter" ones that prefer to be more discreet and humanlike. This is the same in Hellsing and a bit in 'Salem's Lot, and in some other movies and books. I think it is a good point to realize that there can be different vampires in one story just like there are people with different characters. Also, there are the stereotypical vampires: either you have no mind of your own and just want blood, or you are super classy and very sexy (underworld..). There doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground.....
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't think there are many characters who fill in the middle ground specifically, but in various stories the bloodthirsty type will repress this thirst (often for someone else's sake). This character is then a repressed bloodthirsty, so above them, but not classy. Slevin in 30 Days of Night, Eli in Let The Right One In. Those are really all the non-classy vampires I can think of who we have looked at. But it appears that even the most bloodthirsty types can have some level of control if they so desire, especially for someone they love.
